Description

Sharing A New Song celebrates the human spirit through choral music. Reaching across social and political boundaries to other countries and within the United States, Sharing A New Song promotes intercultural understanding and lasting relationships. The group was founded in 1983 by David Clapp, a high school teacher concerned about attitudes toward the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Its diverse membership is drawn from the Greater Boston, Massachusetts area and includes teachers, engineers, psychologists, professional musicians, retired seniors, "shower" singers, students and octogenarians (and everywhere in between). Sharing A New Song traveled to China in 1995; South Africa in 1997, 1999, 2001, and 2005; Cuba in 2000, 2002, and 2009; Vietnam and Cambodia in 2006; and Brazil in 2008. In 2003 and 2007, singing and service were the focus of SANS trips within the United States, visiting the Gullah community in South Carolina and the Houma Indian Nation and Cajun community in Louisiana. In 2004, the chorus returned to Russia, and sang in the Estonian Song Festival in Tallinn, Estonia. SANS traveled again to Russia, including Siberia, in 2010. In Yaroslavl, a city about 200 miles northeast of Moscow, SANS participated in a song festival to celebrate that city’s millennium. Some SANS members extended their trip in Mongolia, where we attended the Naadam Festival. In 2011, SANS returned to Louisiana, where we reunited with friends in the Houma Indian Nation and in New Orleans. In August 2012, SANS experienced another amazing adventure in South Africa, meeting and singing with old friends, sharing music with the Soweto Gospel Choir, the Wits Choir at the University of Johannesburg, and the Imilonji KaNtu Choral Society. We sang each day with our hosts at meals, in community churches, at schools, in formal concerts, and informal gatherings. In June 2013, SANS traveled to Nicaragua, a first for SANS. In 2014, the chorus traveled to two new countries—Bulgaria, and Romania The journey ended in Tallinn, Estonia for the 26th Estonian Song and Dance Celebration, and returned home by way of Istanbul, Turkey. Each of these trips fulfilled the SANS mission of learning, service, and building bridges, using the universally understood language of music. Here at home, Sharing A New Song sings in Boston area concerts, as well as in area churches, orphanages, and homeless shelters.
