iCal 3:00 PM. Cantilena Chamber Choir [MA]: Britten 100. A Benjamin Britten 100th Birthday Celebration featuring Rejoice in the Lamb, Hymn to St. Cecilia, Festival Te Deum, Hymn to the Virgin and selections from Five Flower Songs. Also on the program are two Part Songs that provide a rare glimpse of the earliest choral music of Britten. Schenectady-based organist Trevor Kahlbaugh will accompany all of the choral works for organ.
\ \ Special guests on the program are the South Hadley Children’s Chorus: West Choir directed by Catharine Melhorn, and the Hampshire Young People’s Chorus Concert Choir directed by K.C. Conlan. They will sing Britten’s Friday Afternoons, twelve children’s songs with piano accompaniment. Ms. Melhorne served 36 years as Choral Director at Mount Holyoke College and was President of the American Choral Directors Association, Massachusetts chapter. Ms. Conlan teaches vocal music at The Common School in Amherst.

iCal 3:00 PM. Cantilena Chamber Choir [MA]: Martin Luther King Concert of Spirituals. Join us and guest choirs the Hudson Valley Choral Society, MCLA Allegrettos and the Taconic High School Choir for a concert of spirituals and more. Dr. King will be remembered in poems and speeches, but the focus of the program will be a spiritual sing along with the choirs. The choirs will perform works by Alice Parker, Moses Hogan and arrangements of familiar spirituals such as Deep River, Ride up in the Chariot, and Wade in the Water. All words and music will be provided. Also on the program will be a personal recollection delivered by Gail Street, who was present at Dr. King’s funeral. Heinrich Biber: Missa Christi Resurgentis; with "The Glory of Venice," music for multiple choirs and instrumental groups by Giovanni Gabrieli. Joining the performance is Boston-based early music ensemble Cambridge Concentu. Pre-concert lecture at 2 p.m. by Dr. Jeremy Yudkin, Professor of Music and Chairman of the Department of Musicology and Ethnomusicology at the School of Music at the College of Fine Arts, Boston University. A showing of the new documentary film, Robert Shaw - Man of Many Voices, a chronological examination of Shaw's remarkable life and meteoric rise to national fame as a choral ad orchestral conductor. Interspersed with archival film and peer interviews, the film explores Shaw’s beginnings in a small California town through the challenges and triumphs of his serendipitous and improbable career.
