Come join Convivium Musicum for a festive Renaissance Christmas Community Sing - enjoy singing favorite motets of the season, such as Victoria's "O Magnum Mysterium," Sweelinck's "Hodie Christus Natus Est," and works by Lassus, Byrd, and more, plus favorite carols of the period. The Regensburg Manuscript, a collection of six partbooks, is a significant collection of late-16th-century polyphony. Although the manuscript contains vocal music, it was copied out for an ensemble of wind players, and is unique among sources of the period in containing specific instrumentation for around half of its 120 compositions. Join Convivium as we rummage through the extensive musical closet of Johannes Brahms, dusting off the Renaissance and early Baroque polyphony that inspired his own most inventive and artful choral utterances. Brahms’ music library reflected the composer's almost unprecedented respect for artists of the past. One is not surprised to find Schubert, Mozart, Haydn and Bach among his collection, but there was also a healthy collection of Lotti, Lassus, Praetorius, Eccard, and other composers that were virtually unknown at the time. Brahms was also responsible for bringing many of these composers to the Viennese public, helping to usher in more generally the concept of the "canon" in Western musical life.
