The Choir School at St. John's
Effective date for entry: 6/29/2020
|Mailing address:||St. John’s Episcopal Church|
100 Chapel Street
Portsmouth, NH 03801
An after-school music program that meets Tuesdays & Thursdays at St. John’s Church in Downtown Portsmouth from 3:15-5:00pm. Students range from grades 3 through 8 and hail from many Seacoast communities. (Treble/unchanged voices only.) Children from Dondero Elementary and Portsmouth Middle Schools may take the choir school van to St. John’s after school. (All Portsmouth students are offered transportation home.)
WHAT IS THE COST? The program is tuition-free. Families are asked to contribute in ways that work for them. Sometimes this means financial contributions, sometimes it means volunteering at an event, and sometimes this means giving your child a place in the group. We want to create an even bar for all students to try singing and studying music regardless of background, economic status, religion, gender, or any other barrier. We are funded through the support of donations and community grants.
Students focus on building basic musical knowledge and applying it through vocal performance in a choral setting. We are a choral-focused program, but also branch out to perform pop, folk, rock, and musical theater. Collaboration is a key ingredient in music-making and in the Choir School program.
