iCal 7:30 PM. Calliope [MA]: Of Lords and Ladies: Musical Experiences That Unlock and Create Memories. Calliope, Boston’s collaborative choral/orchestral ensemble, will close their sixth season with a benefit concert for ARTZ: Artists for Alzheimer’s. The program recalls the 1920s, '30s, and '40s and includes arrangements of "Singin' In the Rain," "When I'm 64," "Seventy-Six Trombones," the waltz from Tchaikovsky’s "Sleeping Beauty," "Baby, It's Cold Outside," "Strike Up the Band," "Good Ole Summertime," "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," "My Funny Valentine," and "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat," along with a My Fair Lady medley, a Cole Porter salute, the overture from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, and selections from Die Fledermaus. Please join us for “Of Lords and Ladies: Musical Experiences to Unlock and Create Memories.” The program recalls the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s and features well-known tunes from Broadway and other musical genres. The concert will benefit ARTZ - Artists for Alzheimer's and the I'm Still Here Foundation. iCal 7:30 PM. Calliope [MA]: US premiere of Dvorák's Šelma Sedlák (The Cunning Peasant), to benefit Boston's Czech and Slovak Association. Calliope, Boston’s collaborative choral/orchestral ensemble, will close their seventh season with the US premiere of Antonín Dvorák's 1877 comic opera Šelma Sedlák (Die Bauer ein Schelm - The Cunning Peasant), sung in German in concert version (with a pre-concert lecture at 6:45 PM). A portion of the proceeds from this performance will benefit the Czech and Slovak Association of Boston. Tickets: $45 (premium seating), $35 (general admission), and $25 (seniors and students w/ ID). Discounted rates are available for groups of 10 or more. Dvorák engages the dance music of his Slavic heritage throughout the opera. Julia O’Toole, Calliope’s founder and director, spent time in Prague this past summer working with manuscripts and archival materials surrounding Šelma Sedlák. Pasticcio! is a "new" piece, written in collaboration with playwright Abbey Fenbert, compiled from a collection of Calliope members' favorite choruses, arias, duets, and scenes by Handel, Gluck, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Wagner, Dvořák, Loesser, Bernstein, and more.
