Jephte, an historical exemplar of the mid 17th Century oratorio, is based on the story of Jephthah in the Old Testament Book of Judges. Carissimi established much of what is now considered traditional to the Baroque oratorio, including the use of a narrator linking vocal soloists and the chorus, with the alternation of recitatives and arias. The documentary follows the creation and production of the moving and powerful oratorio, commissioned by GMChorale and composed and written by Sarah Meneely-Kyder and Nancy Fitz-Hugh Meneely. The oratorio, based on a true story, tells of a war veteran coming back with post traumatic stress disorder that changes his relationship with his family forever. iCal 3:30 PM. GMChorale [CT]: Documentary Film Letter from Italy, 1944: a New American Oratorio, Gala World Premiere. The film, by documentarian Karyl Evans and narrated by actress Meryl Streep, chronicles the creation of the oratorio Letter from Italy, 1944, presented to a standing-room-only audience by the GMChorale in April 2013. The oratorio, by sisters Sarah Meneely-Kyder (composer) and Nancy Meneely (librettist), tells the story of their father, Dr. John Meneely, a medic in WWII, who returned home with emotional wounds - what we now term PTSD. It is also the story of any soldier who goes to war and returns home to struggle with the effects of that experience. Suggested donation $25.
