Registered participants will also receive a link to the recorded premiere performance of his "Northern Lights" multimedia symphony, as well as a documentary entitled "Nordic Light: A Composer's Diary" that follows the process of creating this symphony, including three expeditions to Alaska, Iceland, Greenland, and Scandinavia to collect folksongs and legends about aurora. Using the Moveable Do system, Providence Singers Artistic Director Dr. Christine Noel will lead participants through sequential sight-singing exercises, beginning in stepwise motion and gradually moving to more complex material. Separate ear training techniques will be introduced to enable singers to identify various pitches in a given tonality. We’ll explore and drill rhythms of intermediate and advanced difficulty. Singers will not be expected to sing alone, and participants of all levels are welcome. All materials will be provided, including Bach chorales, which will form the basis of our study. Symphony No. 2, the “Resurrection Symphony,” was, with Symphony No. 8, among Mahler’s most popular and successful works during his lifetime. Preoccupied by visions of his own death and by larger philosophical questions about the purpose of life, Mahler pondered a kind of immortality through artistic achievement.
