Seeking Woods Hole Cantata Consort Music Director for 2027 Summer Season and Beyond
The Woods Hole Cantata Consort is a summer community chorale and chamber orchestra located in the village of Woods Hole in the town of Falmouth on Cape Cod. For 52 years, we have performed a high-quality program of classical and “classical-adjacent” music once a year for the local community.
Our organization consists of approximately 45 adults with diverse musical skills who come together to rehearse weekly (and occasionally twice-weekly) from mid-June until we perform in mid-August. In recent years we have performed major and minor works by Mozart, Bach, Purcell, and Handel as well as folk song arrangements by Rutter, works by Ola Gjeilo, and lesser-known songs by Bob Chilcott and Sarah Quartel.
2026 marks the final concert led by current Music Director Maggie Bossi. We are eager to find a successor for 2027 and beyond.
Job Description
We are seeking an experienced choral director with patience, a sense of humor, and teaching skills to direct a seasonal choral group that is a Woods Hole tradition.
This individual will have artistic autonomy, and will put together an appropriate musical program, find and contract with vocalists and instrumentalists, and run rehearsals including a few sectionals between mid-June and mid-August. Singing ability and/or piano/organ skills would be valuable additional assets. Candidates may be asked to attend a rehearsal during the 2026 season and then run a sectional and will receive a stipend for participating in these activities.
A general outline of the annual duties of the WHCC music director includes:
- By April, select and share a summer program with the board, including an estimated budget for the music and professional performers.
- Before June, contract with accompanist, soloists, and instrumentalists; source and purchase or borrow music.
- Between mid-June and Road Race Weekend (mid-August), plan and run Tuesday evening rehearsals as well as two sectionals, two dress rehearsals, and rehearsals with instrumentalists and soloists.
- Conduct performances on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.
- As appropriate, attend board meetings, in person or virtually, and support the process of fundraising and publicity.
